River Raisin National Battlefield Park will host a FREE KAYAK DAY on Sunday September 22nd. Program will take place at Hellenberg Park. Hellenberg Park has bathrooms but no running or potable water. Sessions will run 10am – noon and 1 – 3pm. Actual kayak time will be about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and distance covered will be 1-3 miles depending on group ability. Individuals and groups may only sign up for one session, to ensure that the maximum number of people can enjoy the experience. Sessions will include interpretive programming about the natural and cultural history of the River Raisin region. Those interested will need to call the Battlefield to sign up at 734-243-7136, providing the number in their group and a phone number at which they can be reached day-of. Only those 11 and up can kayak for safety reasons. Battlefield staff require that attendees wear close-toed shoes (such as an old pair of sneakers) to protect feet, bring a reusable water bottle, and sun protection (such as a hat and sunscreen). Single-person kayaks, personal flotation devises (PFDs), and a water cooler provided. Participants may bring and use their own kayak and PFD if they prefer. Alcohol and other substances strictly prohibited. We will kayak rain or shine but may cancel for storms. If we cancel, we will call the phone number provided on the sign-up sheet. Please arrive 15 minutes early. If participants are late we may offer the spot to someone else. We look forward to saying farewell to summer and welcoming fall out on the beautiful River Raisin with you!
