Elm Bark Canoe returns to Southeast Michigan

By November 17, 2020No Comments

In June 2020, I was honored to attend an elm bark canoe building session in Grand Rapids, MI. The canoe is made of elm bark that we helped peel from the tree, roll, cut, and form. The beautiful canoe will be on display in the River Raisin National Battlefield Park Education Center when it opens. I was the first Wyandot Chief in 150 years to paddle a canoe on the Kalamazoo River. It was an exciting and awesome experience that lifted my heart and soul. This is history in the making for our people.  This was a tremendously exciting and wonderful experience for me, and I feel honored to have been a part of re-creating a small piece of our peoples’ history.
